Birds in Colorado Springs

A couple of days after placing my new bird feeder outside of my art studio window, I started keeping track of the different birds that appeared. I have now seen 14 different birds. Some of my favorites are seen below. The feeder is very popular and as the weather turns cooler, the birds eat more and more. I have also seen the squirrels constantly foraging for seeds. They don't seem to try to knock the bird feeder down as much, but just wait for some tasty morsel to drop.
Here is a list of the birds I have seen so far, in no particular order:
  1. Black-billed Magpie
  2. Mourning Dove
  3. Western Kingbird
  4. Common Grackle
  5. House Finch
  6. American Goldfinch
  7. Female Downy Woodpecker
  8. Scrub Jay
  9. Blue Jay
  10. Black Capped Chickadee
  11. White-breasted Nuthatch
  12. Swainson's Thrush
  13. Western Tanager

Black-Capped Chickadees

Black-Capped Chickadee LWatry©2012
The Black-Capped Chickadees have found the new bird feeder. The chickadees are not as afraid of me as some of the other birds and instead of flying away when I come out to take pictures, they will chirp at me loudly. The Wild Bird store, where I purchased the feeder, said the chickadees like sunflower seeds.

Recently I have enjoyed creating miniature paintings of black-capped chickadees. You can see some of my bird paintings on my blog page "My Bird Art" or click this link: Miniature Bird Watercolors.

My New Bird Feeder

New Bird Feeder LWatry©2012
I recently placed a bird feeder in a tree outside my art studio window. When I purchased this feeder from a local store, I asked for one that squirrels could not get into. Our previous feeder was a cheep variety that only lasted for about two weeks before the squirrels got into it and knocked it down.

I started this blog as a way to do a demonstration for a local art group on setting up a blog, but now I am having so much fun watching the squirrels and birds at the feeder that I plan on keeping it going.
Please check back for new postings, as I have started taking pictures of all the birds that are visiting the feeder and our yard now. With all the pictures I have taken, I have new source material for my bird paintings, especially the black capped chickadees. (See my bird print for sale on my watercolor blog - "Watercolor Reflections")
I will continue to post the silly antics of the squirrels, as well.
